Is search marketing important?

How much effort should you put into search? Is SEO really that important? Find out in this article.

Search Bootcamp Advertisement

How did you find this article? Perhaps you searched for it. Perhaps you clicked on a link. Perhaps you saw it mentioned in social media.

There are several ways we can all get to see things on the web – search is just one of them.

So, how important is it? Should you be spending your time on activities such as SEO or will your time be better spent on social media activity and email marketing?

To consider this we need to go back to the “olden days” – the days before the Internet was invented.

Back then, if you were in business, you had just a handful of ways in which people could find out about what you did. There was “word of mouth”, just having a great reputation so that people would call you. Then there was the right listing in Yellow Pages and other business directories, such as Kelly’s. After that you could do some advertising in newspapers, magazines and on billboards. And if that didn’t help, you could use public relations and other marketing methods such as direct mail.

However, when the Internet arrived on the scene none of these things were really replaced – you can still get a Yellow Pages listing, except it is mostly online now, not in a printed form. You can still advertise on billboards, but now you can add in other forms of advertising such as Pay Per Click and website banners. The Internet has not provided an alternative means of marketing your business, it has just added several more ways.

Ultimately, as the theorists like to say, the “marketing mix” has dramatically increased.

Search marketing is not an alternative to other forms of marketing – it is just one more method to be added to the mix.

However, there is a widely held theory that all you need to do these days is get yourself to the top of the Google rankings and all will be well. That theory, of course, misses the point that there are also other search engines that need to be considered. It also misses the point that not every one of your customers uses the Internet.

People like to make their life and work as easy as possible. That is actually part of our psychological make-up. So anything that turns up that apparently makes life easy is something we latch on to. There is little doubt that if you can get to Number One on Google you do generate lots of potential business. This therefore fits with our notion of making life easy. Get to Number One on Google and you don’t have to worry about all those other marketing bits and pieces.

At least that’s the theory.

However, theories are not always right.

For a start, Google’s own data show that most people who visit websites get their WITHOUT conducting a search. Most website visits come from clicking links, email marketing, social media activity or even typing in the domain name directly. Search is actually only responsible for about a quarter of all website visits.

It therefore would seem sensible to only use search marketing as about a quarter of your marketing mix.

Except, dividing your time and effort on this mathematical basis is not as straightforward as it might seem.

Consider how the people who recommend you on Facebook might have found your website. You might get traffic from their link on Facebook as a result of them having found you on Google in the first place. Equally the word of mouth recommendation that leads to someone typing in your URL directly may have come from an initial search. In other words, the mathematics of marketing data can lead us in the wrong direction. Actually searching for a business might only represent a quarter of website visits, but behind the other three quarters of visits there could well be a significant search element.

That means that search marketing and its associated SEO is a high priority – even though other aspects of marketing, such as public relations, should also be high priority. In reality, the marketing mix has just got bigger and search marketing is a significant component of that mix.

However, it is not the only component; you need balance. And to achieve that means you need more data – just what journey did your customers take to connect with your business? Find that out and you’ll then be in a much clearer position as to the true value of search marketing for your particular business.

How much does SEO cost? How can you get more for your money?

If you want to succeed with your website, you have to decide how much you will spend on search engine optimization.

If you want to succeed with your website, you have to decide how much you will spend on search engine optimization. As SEO is crucial to survive the fierce online competition, the question is not if you should invest in SEO but how much you invest. SEO can be very expensive. How can you get more for your money?

the

How much do SEO companies charge?

If you decide to hire an SEO agency, there are several pricing models:

1. Hourly consulting: the average SEO agency (or individual) charges between $100 and $300 per hour (all amounts in US$).

2. Fixed prices: businesses that are new to SEO often buy services at fixed prices. This can be a website content audit (usually $500-$7,500), link profile audits ($500-$7,500) or SEO copywriting ($0.10-$0.50 per word).

3. Monthly retainer: the most popular pricing model is a monthly payment. On average, SEO agencies and individuals charge $750-5,000 per month. Depending on how much you pay, you can expect different services: regular analytics reports, on-site optimization, link building, keyword research, etc.

Some offshore companies offer ‘SEO’ services for much lower prices ($100-$500/month). In general, you can be sure that these services use spam techniques to ‘promote’ your website and that these services will backfire on you.

If an SEO service is too cheap, it’s likely that they use risky methods. That’s a lesson that many businesses had to learn in the past.

How to get more for your money

Many things that SEO agencies do for you can be automated with the right tools. For example, our web-based SEO tool SEOprofiler can do the following for you:

  • Regular website audits: the website audit tool in SEOprofiler automatically checks the content of your web pages and it shows you all the errors that should be corrected.
  • Regular link profiler audits: the link profiler tool in SEOprofiler shows you the backlink structure of your website. It also shows the backlinks that could have a negative influence on the rankings of your web pages.
  • Regular analytics reports: use the scheduler in SEOprofiler to automatically get website analytics reports by email. You can also view your reports online and you get access to all important key metrics.
  • On-site optimization: the Top 10 Optimizer tool in SEOprofiler analyzes the content of your web pages.
  • Regular position checks: the ranking monitor in SEOprofiler checks the position of your web pages on Google, Bing and Yahoo. You can specify the exact city from which the rankings should be checked. The ranking monitor informs you about dramatic ranking changes, it shows easy ranking opportunities, and much more.

Instead of the $2,500 that the average client pays his SEO agency for these services, you can get all of this for a much lower price with SEOprofiler, which is a do-it-yourself SEO tool.

Even if you only use the fully-automated reporting tools in SEOprofiler, you will save a lot of money. If you use all tools in SEOprofiler, you will save even more.

Should you hire an SEO agency or should use use a do-it-yourself tool?

This depends on your needs. If you have the money, hiring an SEO agency or an SEO professional can be a good solution. To get results, you should invest at least $2500 per month. If you pay less, you’ll only get automated reports.

If you can invest some time in your website, a do-it-yourself SEO tool can help you to save a lot of money. For example, SEOprofiler creates the same reports that you will get from a professional SEO agency – for a fraction of the costs. You can even use SEOprofiler to offer your own SEO services.

Google: your regular web pages influence your mobile rankings

Your mobile search engine ranking depends upon your desktop version.

In a video on YouTube, Google’s John Mueller said that the desktop version of your web pages will influence the position of your web pages in Google’s mobile search results. A user was afraid that hidden content in the mobile version of his web pages had a negative influence on the rankings:

“We are looking at the desktop version. That’s the canonical version so if you have the connection between the two pages, if they’re separate pages and we’d be looking at the desktop version and that someone would be using for indexing.

So if it’s visible on the desktop version and you’re kind of holding it away, simplifying it on the mobile version, then that’s absolutely fine.

If we run across situations where we see that people are abusing this that they’re kind of […] showing cartoons on the desktop side and showing adult content on the mobile site then that is something where we might have to reconsider that and see what we are doing there.”

Watch the video

What does this mean in detail?

There are two important things:

  1. It’s okay to hide content on the mobile version of your web pages. Actually, it is often necessary to hide some parts of a page to improve the usability of the mobile pages. For example, some content might be hidden until the visitor of the mobile page clicks on a ‘more’ button, a panel or another navigational element on the page.
  2. The desktop version of your pages influences the rankings of your mobile pages.According to John Mueller, Google will use the desktop version of your web pages to calculate the rankings. If your desktop pages are relevant, this will also have a positive effect on the rankings of your mobile pages.

Google Penguin 3.0 is here – what you have to do now

Google’s John Mueller confirmed that the Google Penguin 3.0 update had been released

In a video on YouTube, Google’s John Mueller confirmed that the Google Penguin 3.0 update had been released yesterday. How will this affect the rankings of your web pages and what do you have to do now?

What is Google’s Penguin update?

Google Penguin is a filter in Google’s ranking algorithm that targets websites that use spam methods to get backlinks. For example, Google does not like paid backlinks, automatically created backlinks from forums, blogs, etc.

When did Google release the new Penguin update?

Last Friday, some webmasters began to notice major changes in Google’s search results pages. The update was finished yesterday.

This is Google’s fifth update of the initial Penguin algorithm that was released in April 2012. The last Penguin update was last October.

How will the new update affect your web pages?

When your website has been penalized by Google’s Penguin algorithm, you have to wait for the next update until your website can recover. That’s the reason why so many people have waited for this new update.

If your website was penalized in the past, and if you removed the spammy backlinks in the meantime, your website might recover now.

It can also happen that your website rankings drop if you have many links from low quality pages. That does not necessarily mean that your website has been penalized.

If Google discounts some link types, these links no longer count as votes for your site. If your site benefited from these ‘fake’ votes, your web page rankings might drop.

What do you have to do to secure your rankings?

Google also announced that they will update the Penguin update more frequently. Chances are that your website can recover faster if it has been hit by the new algorithm.

To make sure that your website does not get penalized, remove the bad backlinks that point to your site. The link disinfection tool in SEOprofiler helps you to locate bad links that point to your site.

Just enter the URL of your website and the link disinfection tool will show you backlinks that can have a negative influence on your website rankings:

Google announces another Panda update

How will this update affect the rankings of your web pages on Google?

In a post on Google+, Google’s Pierre Far announced the latest version of Google’s Panda update. How will this update affect the rankings of your web pages on Google? What can you do to make sure that your web pages get better rankings?

New Panda update

What is Google’s Panda update?

Google’s ‘Panda’ algorithm is a filter that Google designed to penalize web pages with thin or poor content. If the content of a website has been copied from other web pages, or if the content has very low quality, it won’t rank well on Google.

What’s new in the latest Panda update?

Here’s Pierre Far’s official announcement:

“Earlier this week, we started a slow rollout of an improved Panda algorithm, and we expect to have everything done sometime next week.

Based on user (and webmaster!) feedback, we’ve been able to discover a few more signals to help Panda identify low-quality content more precisely. This results in a greater diversity of high-quality small- and medium-sized sites ranking higher, which is nice.

Depending on the locale, around 3-5% of queries are affected.”

What does this mean for your website?

1. If your website was penalized before

If your website was penalized by the last Panda update, your rankings might recover if you have changed your web pages in the meantime.

If your rankings recovered by October, 5th, you made the right changes. If not, you have to improve the content of your web pages.

2. If your website was not penalized before

If your website statistics show a significant traffic drop from Google, it might be that Google’s new algorithm decided that your website content was not good enough.

In that case, you have to improve the content of your web pages to get better rankings.

Google’s Panda algorithm targets websites with low quality content. If you have a real website with real content, you don’t have to worry about this update.

High Google rankings are the result of good web page content and good backlinks. The tools in SEOprofiler help you to get both. If you haven’t done it yet, try SEOprofiler now:

Bing explains how they detect, process and filter out search spam

Bing tries to understand the spammer’s motivation

Some days ago, Igor Rondel, Principal Development Manager, Bing Index Quality, published a blog post about the way Bing treats web spam. His post explains how Bing detects, processes and filters out search spam from their index.

Web page elements that help Bing to detect spam:

Bing tries to understand the spammer’s motivation. As most spammers want to make money, Bing analyzes the following:

  1. Quality of contentAccording to Igor Rondel, spammers generate content targeted at search engines and their algorithms, whereas legitimate SEOs generate content for their customers.

In most cases, spam pages have inadequate content with limited value to the user. “There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of signals used to make this assessment, ranging from simple things like number of words on the page to more complex concepts of content uniqueness and utility.”

  2. Presence of adsPresence of ads doesn’t make a page bad. Bing’s algorithms check how many ads appear on the page, the type of ads (e.g. banner, grey-overs, pop-ups), and how intrusive/disruptive they are.
  3. Positional & layout informationWhere is the main content located? Where are the ads located? Do the ads take up the prime real estate or are they neatly separated away from the main content (e.g. in the header/ footer or side pane)? Is it easy for users to mentally separate content from ads?

Popular spam techniques that Bing does not like

Igor Rondel listed some spam techniques that Bing does not like. For example, Bing considers the following spam:

  • stuffing page body/url/anchors with keywords
  • performing link manipulation via link farms, link networks, forum post abuse
  • including hidden content on the page not meant for human consumption.

These are the same things that Google does not like. If you want to avoid a penalty, better avoid these methods.

How spammers create content

According to Bing’s Igor Rondel, there are many content generation methods that spammers use:

  • copying other’s content (either entirely or with minor tweaks)
  • using programs to automatically generate page content
  • using external APIs to populate their pages with non-unique content.

Bing’s algorithms try detect these and similar mechanisms. To amplify this, they also develop creative clustering algorithms (using things like page layout, ads, domain names and Whois-type information) that in a way act as force-multipliers to help identify large clusters of these mass produced pages/ sites.

Do not use spam techniques if you want to get high rankings that last. Bing and Google have big anti-spam departments and your website will be penalized if you use spam techniques.

If you want to get high rankings that last, use white-hat SEO methods to promote your website. SEOprofiler only offers white-hat SEO methods that are good for web searchers, businesses and search engines.

Is HTTPS really necessary to get high rankings on Google?

According to Google, websites that use HTTPS might get a small ranking boost. Is this ranking boost relevant and what do you have to do to benefit from this change?

Last week, Google announced HTTPS as a ranking signal. According to Google, websites that use HTTPS might get a small ranking boost. Is this ranking boost relevant and what do you have to do to benefit from this change?

Google and HTTPS

What exactly did Google say?

Here’s the exact text of the announcement:

“We’re starting to use HTTPS as a ranking signal. For now it’s only a very lightweight signal — affecting fewer than 1% of global queries, and carrying less weight than other signals such as high-quality content.

What exactly is HTTPS?

HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure)  is a communications protocol for secure communication over a computer network.

The main motivation for HTTPS is to prevent wiretapping and man-in-the-middle attacks.

Why does Google give HTTPS websites a ranking boost?

There’s no obvious reason why HTTPS websites should get a ranking boost. Websites with low quality content and bad backlinks remain what they are even if the use HTTPS.

Normally, HTTPS only makes sense for web pages on which users enter sensible information (payment data, address data, etc.). For all other pages, HTTPS does not add any benefit to the user experience.

A bad website with HTTPS won’t get high rankings

Google says that HTTPS is only a very lightweight signal at this time. That means that there are many other things that are much more important.

For example, the content of your web pages is a very important factor. The keywords for which you want to get high rankings should appear in the right elements on your pages.

Your web pages should also have good backlinks from other sites. Without good backlinks, your pages won’t get high rankings.

At this time, adding HTTPS to your website might move your pages from position 798 to position 763. You won’t get to the first result page with that change. If you want to find out what you have to do to get your web pages on Google’s first results page, use the tools in SEOprofiler:

Five ways to inadvertently keep Google from indexing your website

In this article, you’ll learn how to block Google and how to make sure that you do not block Google inadvertently.

It might be that you’re blocking Google without knowing it. That means that Google won’t index all the pages of your website. In this article, you’ll learn how to block Google and how to make sure that you do not block Google inadvertently.

Keep out - Google

1. Errors in the robots.txt file of your website will keep Google away

The disallow directive of the robots.txt file is an easy way to exclude single files or whole directories from indexing. To exclude individual files, add this to your robots.txt file:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /directory/name-of-file.html

To exclude whole directories, use this:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /first-directory/
Disallow: /second-directory/

If your website has a robots.txt file, double check your robots.txt file to make sure that you do not exclude directories that you want to see in Google’s search results.

Note that your website visitors can still see the pages that you exclude in the robots.txt file. Check your website with the website audit tool in SEOprofiler to find out if there are any issues with the robots.txt file.

2. Use the meta robots noindex tag and Google will go away

The meta robots noindex tag enables you to tell search engine robots that a particular page should not be indexed. To exclude a web page from the search results, add the following code in the <head> section of a web page:

<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex, nofollow”>

In this case, search engines won’t index the page and they also won’t follow the links on the page. If you want search engines to follow the links on the page, use this tag:

<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex, follow”>

The page won’t appear on Google’s result page then but the links will be followed. If you want to make sure that Google indexes all pages, remove this tag.

The meta robots noindex tag only influences search engine robots. Regular visitors of your website still can see the pages. The website audit tool in SEOprofiler will also inform you about issues with the meta robots noindex tag.

3. The wrong HTTP status code will send Google away

The server header status code enables you to send real website visitors and search engine robots to different places on your website. A web page usually has a “200 OK” status code. For example, you can use these server status codes:

  • 301 moved permanently: this request and all future requests should be sent to a new URL.
  • 403 forbidden: the server refuses to respond to the request.

For search engine optimization purposes, a 301 redirect should be used if you want to make sure that visitors of old pages get redirected to the new pages on your website.

The website audit tool in SEOprofiler shows the different status codes that are used by your website and it also highlights pages with problematic status codes.

4. Google won’t index password protected pages

If you password protect your pages, only visitors who know the password will be able to view the content.

Search engine robots won’t be able to access the pages. Password protected pages can have a negative influence on the user experience so you should thoroughly test this.

5. If your pages require cookies or JavaScript, Google might not be able to index your pages

Cookies and JavaScript can also keep search engine robots away from your door. For example, you can hide content by making it only accessible to user agents that accept cookies.

You can also use very complex JavaScripts to execute your content. Most search engine robots do not execute complex JavaScript code so they won’t be able to read your pages.

In general, you want Google to index page pages. The tools in SEOprofiler help you to make sure that Google and other search engines can index your web pages correctly. Use the website audit tool in SEOprofiler to make sure that you do not inadvertently block Google.

Google releases an algorithm update for local search results

The algorithm update changes the local search results on Google. How does this affect your rankings and what do you have to do?

Some days ago, Google released a significant update to its local search algorithm. The unofficial name of that update is “Pigeon”. The algorithm update changes the local search results on Google. How does this affect your rankings and what do you have to do?

Google pigeonWhat has changed with the Pigeon update?

Google aims to provide more useful, relevant and accurate local search results. The changes are visible on the regular web search results page and the results page of Google Maps.

Although Google did not reveal the details, the new ranking algorithm now uses ranking signals that are used in regular web search. The local search results are tied more closely to the regular web search ranking signals.

Google also tried to improve the distance and location ranking parameters.

How will this change affect your website rankings?

The new algorithm is currently rolling out for US English results. If your website does not target the USA, you probably won’t see any changes.

So far, the new algorithm has led to the following changes:

  • Local directory sites get better visibility in Google’s search results. For example, Yelp.com pages can now be seen at the top of the search results if the search query contains the word “Yelp”.
  • For some searches (hotels, restaurants), individual local businesses seem to be listed in the carousel at the top of the search results page. Below that, you will get directory style web pages. Individual local business pages are moved to results page two.
  • For other searches (pizza delivery), the first results page mainly shows individual businesses.

If your local business website has strong SEO signals (good content, many backlinks, mentions on social networks) then this algorithm update can lead to higher rankings.

If your website does not have these strong SEO signals, it’s likely that your website will be outranked by other sites.

How to get the SEO signals that are needed for the new algorithm

It’s no longer enough to be located in the right place if you want to appear in Google’s local search results. If you want to get high rankings, your website needs good content, good backlinks and mentions on social networks.

The tools in SEOprofiler help you to get these strong SEO signals. SEOprofiler is a proven SEO tool that will help you to get your website on Google’s first result page.

Google’s Matt Cutts talks about two popular SEO myths

In a video on YouTube, Google’s Head of Search Spam Matt Cutts talks about popular SEO myths

In a video on YouTube, Google’s Head of Search Spam Matt Cutts talks about popular SEO myths. Here’s what he has to say:

Google claims not to change the search results to make more money

According to Matt Cutts, buying or not buying Google AdWords ads has no positive or negative impact on the rankings of your website. He also says that Google does not make changes to the organic algorithms to encourage people to buy ads.

Given the fact that Google’s result often only show paid ads in the visible area of the search results (i.e. you have to scroll to see the regular results), it seems that this statement of Matt Cutts is not entirely true.

There is no secret way to get in the search results

Matt Cutts says that there is a pattern that he often sees in SEO forums: Someone suggests a specific tactic will lead to high rankings on Google and then everyone follows.

For example, someone says that it is easy to get high rankings through article directories. Half a year later, people will move on from article directories to guest blogging, then to link wheels, and so on.

Matt Cutts says that someone who found a loophole wouldn’t post it in a forum. Instead, he would exploit it to make as much money of it as possible.

Four reasons why SEO seems hard (although it isn’t)

Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the best ways to reach these goals. Many people lose a lot of money because they don’t invest as much in SEO as they should.

All website owners need more traffic and more sales. Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the best ways to reach these goals. Many people lose a lot of money because they don’t invest as much in SEO as they should.

They are afraid that SEO is too difficult or not suitable for their company. Here are four reasons why SEO seems hard to some people although it isn’t.

it can be done

Reason 1: I don’t know how to optimize my website

Search engine optimization seems complex when you start. It’s normal that beginners are confused and uncertain.

Fortunately, SEO isn’t rocket science. Reading a step-by-step SEO tutorial will familiarize you with the basic concepts of search engine optimization.

Even if you plan to hire an SEO agency you should read such a tutorial. If you have a better knowledge, you can judge the level of expertise of the agency that you hire.

Reason 2: I don’t have the staff or the time for SEO

This usually means that search engine optimization is not a high priority for your business. That’s usually a mistake.

Good search engine optimization campaigns can drive a lot of targeted visitors to your website. Good SEO can turn an underperforming website into a cash cow for your business.

Consider changing your priorities. High rankings for the right keywords have a direct influence on the sales of your business.

Reason 3: I cannot compete with big brands

Smaller websites can be quicker than big brands. Big companies often take months to change something on their web pages. There are several things that you can do to compete with large brands:

  • Use better and more targeted keywords that attract better customers.
  • Make your web page titles and descriptions more attractive so that searchers click on your site in the search results.
  • Improve your website navigation so that searchers find things more quickly on your site.
  • Offer something that the big brand does not offer. This can be personal support, better customer service, etc.

Reason 4: I don’t get a positive return on investment

Normally, good SEO campaigns pay for themselves. Unfortunately, there are many shady “SEO agencies” that aren’t as reputable as they should be. If you hire sure an agency, it can happen that you spend a lot of money for nothing.

Five things that you should know about Google’s disavow links tool

Google’s ‘disavow links’ tool can help you to improve the Google rankings of your web pages. If you do not use the tool correctly, you can also damage the Google rankings of your site with the tool

Google’s ‘disavow links’ tool can help you to improve the Google rankings of your web pages. If you do not use the tool correctly, you can also damage the Google rankings of your site with the tool. Here are five things that you should know about Google’s ‘disavow links’ tool:

Danger: disavow links

1. There’s no need to disavow nofollow links

Nofollow links do not influence the Google rankings of the linked pages. That’s why you do not have to include these links in the disavow links file that you send to Google.

Google’s John Mueller made it clear that nofollow links don’t have to be included: “You don’t need to include any nofollow links […] what happens with links that you submit as a disavow, when we recrawl them we treat them similarly to other nofollowed links.”

2. The disavowed links will still be visible in Google Webmaster Tools

Google simply treats disavowed links as nofollow links. Just like nofollow links, the disavowed links will still be listed in Google Webmaster Tools.

Google’s John Mueller confirmed this in a video. You don’t have to worry if these links appear in the link list in Google Webmaster Tools.

3. Google ignores comments in your disavow file

You can use comments in the disavow file but Google will ignore these comments. The comments are only for your own use. Google’s John Mueller explains this in a video:

“The disavow file is something that is processed completely automatically. If you put a lot of text in those comments in the disavow file, then nobody will be looking at them. Those comments are essentially for you, to help you understand the file a little bit better and those comments are not used by the webspam team”.

4. It can be risky to change your mind

If you think that a link should not be disavowed, remove that link from your disavow file and re-upload the file to Google. The problem with that: if you reavow a link that Google considers unnatural, Google will re-penalize your website and it can be harder than before to get the penalty lifted.

Once again, Google’s John Mueller explains this in a video:

“Links are essentially only disavowed as long as they are in the disavow file. So, if you remove them after some point, then essentially when we recrawl and reprocess those URLs and there is no disavow file for this domain then we will treat those as normal links again.

If you remove them, then essentially you are returning them to their normal state. If they were problematic links in the past then they would be problematic links again.”

5. You cannot harm other websites with the disavow links tool

Your website rankings won’t be damaged if someone includes your web pages in a disavow link file that is sent to Google. John Mueller:

“It’s not that we are using this as a spam report form. So, when you get a message saying, ‘You should remove this link to my website or else I’ll put you on my disavow file’, that’s not a threat for your website. It’s not a problem to have your website on a disavow file.”

How to find the links that you should disavow

The disavow links tool is an advanced tool that should be used with caution. You can harm your website rankings if you do not use the tool correctly. It can be difficult to find the links that have a negative influence on your search engine rankings.

That’s why we have developed the link disinfection tool. The link disinfection tool analyzes the backlinks that points to your website and it assigns a risk-score to each link. That makes it as easy as possible to find bad backlinks.

Google’s new attack on scraper sites

If your website content has been stolen by other websites, this tool can help you

Some days ago, Google published some kind of “disavow links tool” for scraper sites. If your website content has been stolen by other websites, this tool can help you. How exactly does it work and how can you benefit from that new tool?

scraper sites

What are scraper sites?

Scraper sites are websites that copy content that other people have created. They post that content on their own website as their own content.

It seems logical that the original website should rank higher on Google than the website that copies the content. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

Scraper websites often rank higher on Google than the original websites. Sometimes, the original website isn’t displayed at all in the search results while the scraper site gets high rankings.

Google’s new approach

Until now, Google has tried to filter scraper sites algorithmically from the search result pages. It seems that this hasn’t worked very well. Google’s Matt Cutts announced a new tool that enables webmasters to report scraper sites:

If you see a scraper URL outranking the original source of content in Google, please tell us about it: http://t.co/WohXQmI45X

— Matt Cutts (@mattcutts) February 27, 2014

How does the new tool work?

To report a scraper website to Google, you have to do the following:

  • Go to this page.
  • Enter the URL of the original page and the URL of the scraper site.
  • Enter the URL of the search result page that demonstrates the problem.

Before you submit the report to Google, you should check that your website follows Google’s webmaster guidelines. If your website has been penalized because of spam, the scraper site tool won’t help you.

What is Google going to do with the data?

Google does not say what they are going to do with the data. Submitting a scraper site through the form does not mean that the scraper website will be removed from the search results. It is likely that Google will use the submitted information to improve the spam detection of the ranking algorithm.

How to improve your web pages

If your own web pages rank higher than the scraper websites, you don’t have to worry about them. Do the following to make sure that your web pages rank as highly as possible:

Four old-school SEO methods that still work if you do it right

Google’s recent updates have spread fear, uncertainty and doubt among webmasters. Which tactics can you still use to build backlinks to your website and which tactics should you avoid?

Google’s recent updates have spread fear, uncertainty and doubt among webmasters. Which tactics can you still use to build backlinks to your website and which tactics should you avoid? There are some old-school tactics that still work if you do it right:old school seo

1. Forum backlinks

How not to do it: Automatically created forum backlinks are a sure way to get a Google penalty. There have been many tools and services that automatically created forum accounts with keyword rich links that pointed to the websites of the user. These links do not work anymore.

How to do it right: If a high quality forum is closely related to the topic of your website, a link from that forum can still have a positive influence on the search engine positions of your web pages.

2. Directories

How not to do it: Bulk submitting your website to directories that will accept any kind of website won’t do your rankings any good.

How to do it right: If your website is listed in a high quality directory that delivers targeted visitors to your website, you should submit your site to that directory. Links from authorative directories (including niche directories) with strict submission guidelines are good for your website.

3. Guest blogging

How not do to it: Using the same article on several blogs doesn’t work. Using keyword rich links in that article might even trigger a Google penalty. If the main purpose of guest blogging is getting links, don’t do it.

How to do it right: Guest blogging can drive targeted visitors to your website if you write for blogs that are related to your business. Your guest blog article should offer the readers of the blog insights or other valuable information. Individual articles on related blogs can have a positive influence on your website’s performance.

4. Link pages

How not to do it: If your link pages contain links to every Tom, Dick and Harry, chances are that these link pages won’t be good for your site.

How to do it right: highly themed link pages that contain links to closely related high quality websites are good for website visitors and search engines.

It’s easy: spamming doesn’t work anymore, building real backlinks works better than ever before.

Here’s the reason why you no longer rank for your keyword

Google is serious about removing spam from the search results.

In an online discussion, a webmaster complained that his site was no longer listed on Google for one of his most important keywords. The backlinks of the website didn’t look suspicious and the other factors also looked okay. Why did the rankings of the website drop?

What exactly happened?

The webmaster of www.mamajeanius.co.uk wondered why his site was no longer listed for the keyword “maternity jeans”. Another forum member analyzed the site and found nothing unusual:
  • The backlinks looked okay to the other forum member. At first glance, he didn’t find any spammy backlinks.
  • About 417 pages of the website were indexed on Google.

Why did Google delist the website for that keyword?

Google’s John Mueller joined the discussion to explain why Google did not show the website for the keyword:

“It looks like your SEO (or previous SEO) may have tried to promote your site in a way that’s in violation of our Webmaster Guidelines. Specifically, I see a lot of unnatural links in low-quality articles as well as blog comments left by someone called ‘Maternity Jeans.’

Stopping these practices, cleaning up unnatural links like these, and using the disavow links tool in cases where you can’t clean them up, would be a good step in the right direction.

Over time (and this process can take months), as our algorithms recrawl the affected URLs, reprocess the links found on the web, and update their data, they’ll be able to take the new state into account.”

In other words, the rankings dropped because the website was spamming Google with artificial links.

What does this mean for your website?

Google is serious about removing spam from the search results. If you want to get high rankings on Google, you should know that:

  • Artificial backlinks (blog comment spam, low quality articles, forum spam, etc.) will get your website in trouble.
  • It can take months until your website recovers from bad backlinks (see John’s answer above).

Use white-hat SEO methods to promote your website. It takes longer to get high rankings with these methods but it’s also much safer. If you use white-hat methods to promote your site, your web pages will get high rankings that last.

SEO is a marathon not a sprint

Search engine optimization is a marathon. It’s not a sprint. If you want to reach the finish line, you have to have to get in shape.

Search engine optimization is a marathon. It’s not a sprint. If you want to reach the finish line, you have to have to get in shape. If you want to get high rankings on search engines, there are several things that you have to do:

SEO is a marathon

1. Be willing to change and be willing to work

Good SEO programs and SEO services will tell you what you have to do but the work is up to you. You must also implement the changes on your website. Take the advice of your SEO fitness coach and do something. Try to improve your website.

Do not search for reasons why improvement is not possible. Do the things that are necessary to bring your website into shape even if it requires some work.

2. Be honest to yourself

If you want to be fitter then you shouldn’t go to the refrigerator at night and pretend that you didn’t. If you want to get higher rankings on Google, you shouldn’t torpedo your search engine optimization efforts by doing things with your website that you like but aren’t recommended by the SEO service.

3. It helps a lot if you have the right equipment

It’s easier to work out if you have the right equipment. If you want to run long distances, you need running shoes. If you want to get on Google’s first result page, you need a good domain name, a good server, clean web pages and a good SEO tool. It will be much easier to get good results then.

4. Do not try to game the system

If you want to be fitter without working out, you might take some pills. This can work for some time but ultimately, the pills will make you sick and destroy your body.

If you want to get quick search engine optimization results, you might consider spammy techniques that promise immediate or very fast results.

These methods can work for some time but Google detects all spam methods sooner or later and your website will be banned from the index.

If you’re not afraid of change then your website will get the rankings that it deserves. It’s not easy to get top 10 rankings on Google but it’s also not difficult if you do the right things.

If you haven’t done it yet, try SEOprofiler now. SEOprofiler helps you to get your website in shape and it will also help you to get high rankings on Google and other search engines:

A new Google filter that can lead to a manual action penalty

If the images that visitors see on your website are not the same images that Google sees, Google might take manual action against your website.

Google has introduced a new spam filter that can lead to a manual action penalty of your website. If the images that visitors see on your website are not the same images that Google sees, Google might take manual action against your website.

Google image mismatch

What is an image mismatch?

According to Google’s official help page, image mismatch means that “some of your site’s images may be displaying differently on Google’s search results pages than they are when viewed on your site.”

As a result, Google can apply a manual action to the affected portions of your website, which will affect how your site’s images are displayed in Google.

What should you do if you get an image mismatch message from Google?

If you get an image mismatch penalty message from Google, make sure that your website displays the same images to users when viewed directly through your website or within Google image search results.

When you have done this, submit a reconsideration request to Google.

A reason why Google cannot display the images from my website

Some webmasters use anti-hotlinking tools on their web pages. These anti-hotlinking tools make sure that the images from your website can only be retrieved from your own domain and not from other websites.

While it is understandable that webmasters don’t want other people to use their images, Google says that this leads to a bad user experience.

Do you have to take action?

If you haven’t received a notification message from Google, you don’t have to worry about this new penalty.

In general, Google only applies penalties to websites that try to trick Google in one way or the other. If you do not use spammy methods on your website, you don’t have to worry about Google’s penalties.

Instead of investing your time cleaning up the damage that spammy techniques can do to your website, it is much better to start with white-hat search engine optimization techniques right from the start.

It takes longer to get high rankings with white-hat SEO methods but once your website has the high rankings, it will keep them much longer and you don’t have to be afraid of Google’s algorithm updates.

If you haven’t done it yet, create your SEOprofiler trial account now. SEOprofiler offers a complete suite of white-hat search engine optimization tools that help you to get high rankings on Google and other search engines:
